What is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is when someone uses the internet with the intent to hurt, scare, or embarrass another person. Forms of cyberbullying can include mean messages, spreading false rumours, or sharing private information without permission/consent. It's important to remember that words can hurt, even when they are written.
Where can it happen?
Cyberbullying can happen on social media apps like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. One of the most common areas where cyberbullying occurs is playing games online. Cyberbullying doesn't have to be local, it could be a politician or a YouTuber. People may create accounts dedicated to bringing this person down or spreading falsified rumours about them.
Examples of Cyberbullying
An example of cyberbullying can occur while playing a game like Fortnite. Imagine four friends are playing together, and one makes a poor callout or decision. The other friends might respond with hurtful comments, telling them they "suck" or that they should quit the game. Even the smallest of words can hurt people. These hurtful comments may lower their self-confidence and the desire to play the game.
The Effects of Cyberbullying
The effects of cyberbullying can take a toll on ones physical and mental state. Constant hurtful comments may lower their self-esteem and their ability to move forward. Bullying can also lead to problems at school, like exclusion in groups and trouble with keeping grades up. Some kids may skip school altogether, just to avoid being ridiculed or laughed at.
